Through the auspices of DREAMS of Wilmington, this project was created as a 10 week after-school project wtih at-risk children attending Blair Elementary School in Wilmington, NC. After coming up with the concept of a "mural within a mural", we taught the children how to tape and paint the backgrounds. They also drew and painted the "mural within the mural" showing their favorite activities. My wife, Cindy, painted the sidewalk and bushes. I added the children, the "school mascot", details and shadows. The viewer sees the same wall, sidewalk and school background as are depicted in the mural. We have been told that teachers still want to ask those kids what they are doing outside during class time!
