As you might imagine, the steps involved in a trompe l'oeil project vary with the size and complexity of the proposed work. Here are the basic steps:

  1. We first meet or correspond as needed to discuss your ideas. This initial consultation is free. If I am required to travel more than 50 miles from my studio in Wilmington, NC, I may ask you to reimburse travel expenses.

  2. I put together a proposal for you. Larger projects will include a "cartoon" of the project. (In this case, a "cartoon" is an old artist's term for a mock-up, sketch or model, as these were usually done on cardboard, or "cartone" in Italian.) My proposal price will be based upon the work itself, not time.

  3. We sign an agreement. Half of the fee is due at signing to begin the project. I will explain in more detail what the project involves, and how long I expect it will take.

  4. The fun begins! If the project is going to be done on panels, I will need to do some measuring and photographing of the space. If the work is going to be applied directly, then the surface will be prepared and we will make arrangements about working hours and so forth.

  5. When the work is completed, the rest of the fee is due.

Things To Watch Out For:

  • Changes to the agreed work. My price is based on what we have already agreed upon. If you wish to make changes or additions to the project while it is in progress, I will present you with a change-order that details the cost of the change or addition. Once you sign the change-order, I'll incorporate the change or addition.  This applies to professional intermediaries as much as it does the client.
